Removing Valves, Valve guides, and Camshaft

I am too cheap to buy the $40 tool to remove the valves, so I modified a nail prybar to work.  :)  Once the valves were out, I removed the springs, valve guides, and then the camshaft and lifters.  8/18/2012.

Removing Crankshaft

All of the pistons are out.  Removed the crankshaft.  It weighs about 70 lbs.  8/18/2012.

Removing Pistons

Removed the oil pan, and removed all of the pistons.  Two of the pistons had broken rings and were pretty mangled.  8/18/2012.

Back apart....all the way

Sandblasting is done.  Engine is down to bare metal.  That isn't silver paint!

Sandblasting Engine

Put the heads and intake back on to keep the sand out.  Since the driveway is on a grade, and the motor stand has wheels, I didn't think rolling a 600 lb motor would end well.  :)  I took the wheels off and use the tractor to "gently" sit it in the driveway.  7/29/2012.

Mounting Engine to Engine Stand

Crappy foreign engine stand didn't fit the bolt spacing on the engine stand, so I had to spend some time modifying it to work.  Use the 2 ton hoist to lift the engine block up to bold to the stand.  7/22/2012.

Removing Transmission / Flywheel / and Clutch

Removed the original three speed (on the column) transmission from the engine.  Then removed the clutch, flywheel and bell housing.  7/7/2012.

Removing the Heads and Intake

Removing the cast iron heads.  Heavy.  The inside of the engine is surprisingly clean.  7/7/2012.

Chassis is Complete! On to the Drivetrain.

The first major milestone is complete.  The next step is rebuilding the original Flathead V8 and three speed transmission.  First we will tackle the engine.  It hasn't been started in over 30 years, but is in amazing shape.  The engine turns over and has compression in every cylinder, although some are very low.  The plan is to take it down to bare block and take it to a machine shop for them to do a magnaflux test, bore the cylinders, reface the valve seats, check the crankshaft, and press in new cam bearings.  Here is a picture of the motor when I took it out last year.  The first step is taking all of the wiring and oil lines off.   7/7/2012.

Rebuilding Steering Drag Link

Kept the original drag link, but rebuilt both ends.  Steering is now complete.  6/3/2012.

New Brake Lines and Master Cylinder

I installed all new stainless steel brake lines.  I polished the original brass fittings to look like new.  Installed a new Master Cylinder and brake light switch.  5/28 - 6/17/2012.
